About Sam

Samantha has strong and ever growing passion for engraving. From a young age Sam was focused on her love of expressing what she saw in the world through art. She carried this with her into the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, receiving her Bachelors in Fine Arts with a concentration in Design. During her time at the UNCG she studied many aspects of art from ceramics and graphic design, to print making and the history of Letters, Signs and Symbols; all of which are evident in her work as an engraver. She also found her love of traveling and other cultures, when she explored Italy for the summer with the school.

Upon graduation she began pursuing her career in engraving. This began with learning the basics from Mr. Mike Dubber, who is a FEGA Master Engraver with a long list of qualifications from his career. He was the first to credential Sam in her journey. As she finished her basic tutelage from Mr. Dubber, she was preparing for a six month apprentice ship in Italy with yet another Master Engraver.

From September 2014 to May of 2015, Sam was living and studying in Gardone Val Trompia, Italy where she completed her class at the Bottega Incisione C. Giovanelli. During this experience she had the opportunity to learn under various Engravers including Dario Cortini. She worked on several practices with a variety of tools and techniques such as bulino line work, scroll work and silver inlay.

Family History

Sam’s father is Kevin Cherry, an avid enthusiast of firearms and collecting. He is the proprietor of Cherry’s Fine Guns, a notable retail and location for firearm enthusiasts in Greensboro, NC. This staple has existed since 1929, where it began in Geneseo, Illinois; which is where her Grandfather Robert “Bob” Earl Patrick Cherry owned and operated it. It moved with the family and the family works to keep with the trends of today’s market and customers.

Sam has traveled with her father to many gun shows and events, both abroad and throughout the nation. She has her own passions for guns and knives, which is the focus in her work as an engraver.
